In order for research to qualify as non-human subjects (NHS), certain criteria must be met. This determination must be made by the IRB, however, the Office of Human Research Protections provides a decision tree to help you determine whether or not your research qualifies.
If you determine that your research qualifies as NHS, you must still submit your application to the IRB. When doing so, include in your submission email that you believe your study qualifies. This will allow us to process your application faster. If the IRB determines that your research is NHS, you will be issued a non-human subjects approval letter. If your research is not NHS, it will be reviewed at the appropriate level by the IRB.
School of Music research may, on occasion, involve international locations or cultures. Certain countries have strict human research requirements of their own that you must follow and be aware of. In these cases, the IRB must verify that your study has met the appropriate requirements and is culturally sensitive. If your research involves an international population or culture, contact the IRB for guidance.
