As a student at Liberty University, you have the opportunity to be a part of our state’s LEAD Day (Legislative Education Advocacy Day) with our state’s chapter of NASW. This is a virtual event on Wednesday, Feb 7th, from 8:15 am to 1:15pm EST. Why is this important? Because it’s policy, of course! And we hope that you can see that it can be both fun, and informative, and light your passions for serving people in a different way!

How does this work? First, click on the link: https://www.naswva.org/lead-day-2024 and use the guest password LEADDAY2024 to register at the bottom of the page (and to see the schedule).

Second: Attend! You must register by Feb. 5th to get the link. You can come and go virtually as your schedule permits, but you must stay for an hour to earn points for a social work activity.

Learn the signs of an opioid overdose and how to save a life! This free virtual training is open to everyone and includes a free REVIVE kit & Narcan.

The day after each training, attendees can pick up their free Narcan and REVIVE kit from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at Horizon Behavioral Health, located at the lower level of 2235 Landover Place, Lynchburg, VA.

Drug Treatment Court is a specialized court docket program that allows individuals to enter long-term drug treatment and agree to court supervision rather than receive jail time. This Drug Court experience will introduce students to program participants who have legal charges as a result of their substance use. Students will have personal interaction with the Judge and the treatment team.

Participation is limited to five students per event and is first come, first serve. Contact Professor Rhonda Turner for more information.

Tote Bag Painting Event

This is a fundraiser event organized by the IJM club at LU. IJM representatives will do a presentation so participants can learn about IJM’s mission, modern-day slavery, and how they can get involved. Social work students can pay $9.10 to paint their own tote bag and all funds will go directly to IJM!

Peace-Love… Positive Vibes Only Youth Summit

Did you know? Over 37% of those with a gambling disorder also have a mood or anxiety disorder. 57.5% of those with a gambling disorder also have a substance use disorder. People who struggle with a gambling disorder can often have several co-occurring disorders that collectively impact their overall wellbeing.

Carolyn Hawley and Donald McCourtney will address the changing landscape of problem gambling in Virginia, identify how to recognize someone who is struggling, and offer treatment options.

The keynote speaker will be Lynchburg native and E. C. Glass graduate, Dr. Khalilah Brown-Dean. Dr. Brown-Dean has performed extensive work in social justice, criminal justice reform, and identity politics. In addition to the guest speaker, there will be a number of resource tables with valuable information of interest to both youth and parents.
