Liberty University: Where Dreams Come TrueSeptember 10, 2013
It was a Monday night…the perfect night for an adventure. There was a cool breeze in the air beckoning me higher up the mountain. Street lights glowed in the distance, giving a slight misty appearance to the evening air. I had approximately 15 minutes. *cue James Bond music* Cars whizzed by. The moon, full and bright, poured light down the mountainside. Somewhere in the distance, a single wolf howled (ok that last part didn’t happen but it would have been perfect!).
Finally I had arrived, just in time for the main event. The anticipation had been building all day. At last it was time for:
My first snowboarding experience ever!
I had signed up for a 9 a.m. snowboarding lesson at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre and was so excited to do something completely out of my comfort zone. After I walked in the Barrick-Falwell Lodge, I went to the counter to check-in. The process didn’t take more than ten minutes. After signing a few papers and renting the equipment I needed for the night, I was ready to go (the best part is that it’s all free for students!).
My instructors name was Eden and she was so encouraging and motivating from the very beginning. After explaining some of the fundamentals of balancing on the board she said I was ready to give it a try. “That quick?”, I thought. Even though it was the bunny slope, I was definitely still nervous to slide down the first time. I put my board over the edge and let gravity do the rest, surprisingly without falling down!
The next hour was such a blast and after many runs down the slope, I got more and more confident. We would add new elements each time, like turning and breaking. It was so great to push myself and keep trying, despite the numerous falls when I would implement a new maneuver.
I’m proud to say I ended out the night without any injuries whatsoever. I will be returning to the slopes very soon, and next time it will be on to the main drop. That will be a whole new level but I’m happy to say that I’m up for the challenge.
One thing I love about Liberty is that, because of the wide range of activities they offer, there’s bound to be something you’ve never done before. And it is such a blessing to be able try new things and “broaden my horizons”. I can’t wait for the next adventure!
