Kicking It Into High Gear
September 7, 2011Liberty University offers not only an outstanding education and incredible Christian environment, but the school also trains the best athletes. This blog is for all you sports fanatics out there, but mostly for the avid soccer fans. This past weekend, the Liberty University Women's soccer team shined during their game against Longwood. The team did not boast of a big scoring game or a last-second game winning shot. Their fame came from a star player.

Training champions for Christ doesn't happen just in the classroom. That champion mentality carries over and wins title's like "Big South Defensive Player of the Week." Out of all the athletes in the Big South division, Karen Blocker showed outstanding defensive skills during not only the Longwood game but also during a recent soccer game against Brown. Her "stats" are pretty impresive. Check it out:

Freshman year: Started 11 games for the Lady Flames; posted a 2.41 GAA and a .719 save percentage; recorded a shutout in scoreless tie against Stetson on September 21; made a season-high 21 saves in 4-0 loss to Old Dominion on September 5; earned Big South Presidential Honor Roll
Sophomore year: Played in 17 games for the Lady Flames;named to the Big South all-conference first team; posted a 1.16 GAA and a .845 save percentage; recorded a season-high 11 saves in games against Winthrop (Oct. 9) and High Point (Oct. 17); finished the season with 93 saves
To some of you, those statistics were just meaningless numbers, but to summarize: this girl is skilled! Although she was benched during some of her Sophomore year due to an injury, she came back with even more drive to protect her goal. In the last week alone, she concluded with 15 saves and allowed just 3 goals in 3 games! I played soccer for 6 years when I was younger, but I have never seen talent like Karen. She definitely earned her title.
