The Royal WeddingSeptember 12, 2011
On April 29th, 2011 as many as 3 billion people gathered to watch Prince William marry his college sweetheart, commoner Kate Middleton. The whole event fascinated me because in Sweden we too have a Monarchy and last summer our crown princess got married to a commoner. Now, I wasn't one of those crazy people who woke up at 5:00 a.m. to watch it, but I did watch it later that day. Liberty's campus was buzzing all week with mixed emotions about Americans watching the royal English wedding. For those of you who didn't watch it, here's a recap!
Kate Middleton arrived at Westminster Abbey at 11:00 a.m (Greenwich Mean Time) in a Sarah Burton dress, and began her long walk down the aisle. Breaking tradition (common theme of the day), Prince William decided to stay facing the alter and to not see his bride until she was standing by his side. When she arrived by his side he whispered to her, you look beautiful.
The ceremony was pretty normal besides the fact that William decided not to have a wedding band. The royal wedding ceremony in England is different from a regualr marriage ceremony in America because the Bride and Groom do not kiss in the Church. The most talked about moment was when the couple emerged on the palace balcony and they shared a kiss, twice! This was the real moment when all tradition went out the window!
Over all, the wedding was a splendid event however they are after all just two human beings. I think the reason why this was such a huge event is because this truly was a princess fairytale story. Every girl dreams of meeting her Prince Charming and after waiting for years, Kate finally got her man.
