For Les and Connie Schofer, the longest sermon they ever heard was on Sunday, Dec. 16, 1984. It wasn’t because the preacher was going over his time or that he was boring — it was because they were antsy, waiting out the last hours before they could call themselves parents.

Dave Campbell has an important job at Liberty University. He’s part museum host, part recruiter, part student mentor and part athletics booster.
Well, he doesn’t hold all those titles officially, but he does step into all those roles on a regular basis.

The book of Genesis tells of an instance when Jacob wrestled with God until daybreak. The end of this physical battle left Jacob with an injured hip and a blessing from the Lord. For the Liberty University wrestling team, each match is physical, and like Jacob, the program is reaping the benefits.

Liberty University co-founder Dr. Elmer Towns sees himself teaching 900 students in a classroom, while simultaneously teaching 9,000 students from all over the world using the Internet. His vision will be nearer to reality this fall when construction is completed on the Towns/Alumni Ministry Training Center.

Mark Hall, lead singer for the top Christian band Casting Crowns, will be a busy man on April 12. He will be on the Liberty University campus during the day as part of the Momentum Youth Ministry Conference, and at night for a College For a Weekend concert.

Brett Fuller, team chaplain for the Washington Redskins, gave a high-energy talk at Fridays convocation in the Vines Center.
He spoke about enduring conflicts and trials and using them to become a better person.

Throughout Liberty University's history, my father would often say publicly that his vision for Liberty was that it would become a world class university for Evangelical Christian young people offering academic excellence in every major field of study, NCAA Division I athletics, and every other service and benefit available at major national universities.

Liberty University’s growth is directly related to its financial supporters. But many of those, including the donor of the largest-ever gift annuity to the university — $3.8 million — have never even stepped foot on the campus. Many have witnessed the ministry blossom from a television set in their living room.

LU hired landscape architect Proctor Harvey to design more than 20 gardens that would beautify the roadway and the campus.

Recently, a jury imposed a judgment of nearly $11 million against a church that travels the country spreading the message that “God Hates America.” This church has gained notoriety in recent years for “celebrating” at the funerals of fallen American soldiers what it proclaims to be God’s judgment on America for having “sold her soul to the sodomites.”

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine signed legislation late Tuesday naming a section of U.S. 460 in Lynchburg the Jerry Falwell Parkway after Liberty University’s co-founder Jerry Falwell Sr., who died last May at age 73.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Steve Newman, R-Lynchburg, pertains to the section of highway between the Monacan Bridge in Lynchburg and Wards Road in Campbell County.

As a 5-year-old boy, Steve Saint’s world revolved around his father. Then he was told the devastating news that his dad had been killed.
“I thought my life was over,” he said at Wednesday’s convocation service in the Vines Center. His visit was part of Missions Emphasis Week at LU.

Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore will visit the Liberty University campus on Friday.
Gilmore, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. John Warner, will be the guest of LU College Republicans.
