Couple’s gift annuities to Liberty total $5 million

November 20, 2009 : University Advancement staff

An Arizona couple who funded Liberty University’s largest-ever gift annuity total — $3.8 million — just more than a year ago have decided to give even more to the school they have supported since the beginning.

Their $3.8 million has now grown to close to $5 million, as the couple purchased their fourth gift annuity earlier this month.

“That’s big news,” said Tom Arnold, director of Liberty University Planned Giving Department, which offers a variety of annuity and estate planning services. “The grand total is by far the largest amount received for gift annuities in the history of Liberty University.”

The couple, both in their 70s, funded their latest annuity with gifts of appreciated stock.

Like so many of Liberty’s most loyal supporters, the couple witnessed the ministry blossom from a television set in their living room, never having stepped foot on campus; they were faithful watchers of Dr. Jerry Falwell’s “The Old Time Gospel Hour.”

In an earlier interview with the Liberty Journal, the couple said they were proud of Liberty and what it stands for, even hoping their three grandchildren (now in middle school and high school) choose to attend here.
