Abused Women and Children



Domestic Violence Prevention Center

The DVPC provides services to abused women and their children. These services include: emergency shelter, group and individual counseling, court advocacy, women's and children's support groups and men's batterers groups. Volunteers may apply to assist caseworkers with these services or they may act as receptionists, answer phones or babysit children. There is also opportunity to assist with general maintenance and grounds care.  Additionally, students may perform administrative functions at the Town Center building.

Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP)

The Sexual Assault Response Program (SARP) is a non-profit program under the YWCA of Central Virginia that is dedicated to providing free crisis intervention, support, advocacy, and information to survivors of sexual violence as well as to family members and friends through ER response at Lynchburg General Hospital, 24-hour hotline, and case management services. Services are offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week to residents of Amherst Town/County, Appomattox Town/County, Bedford Town/County, Campbell County, City of Danville, Halifax Town/County, City of Lynchburg and Pittsylvania County. SARP Volunteer Companions receive 32-hours of training via classroom modules, webinar, and mentoring in the ER. SARP Volunteer Companions must commit to 4 six hour on-call shifts each month outside of normal business hours.

YWCA Church Street Bridal Shop

The Church Street Bridal Shops are fundraisers for the YWCA organization and are located in the Town Center Building in downtown Lynchburg.  We sell wedding gowns, formal gowns and accessories to the public at a drastically reduced price with the proceeds going to benefit our programs, which include the Domestic Violence Prevention Centers, SARP (Sexual Assault Response Program), and Supervised Visitation Center.  Volunteers may apply to assist the bridal and formal consultants in the daily activities which includes handling and re-racking gowns, processing and inventory of new dresses, assisting the customers and in other special projects that are supported by the Bridal and Formal Shops.  This is a retail environment dealing with the public.

YWLead Teen Leadership & Mentoring Program

Opportunity for female students mentor during an entire academic year for effective leadership development. Students may range in age from 12-18 ( typically high school) and will have completed 8 sessions in Impactful Leadership (phase I of the program). Mentors will share their experience and encourage their mentee as she puts into practice leadership skills while being trained as a peer mentor in Phase II and/or III of the program. Mentors must complete an application, background check and training session to be paired.
