Walk In The Light
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” — Psalm 119:105
Congratulations on making it to the end of another school year and finishing strong. The end of the year brings many things to celebrate. Whether you are moving from one grade to the next or graduating and entering a new phase of life, each step you take in the coming months will be steps of excitement and planning for the future.
Make sure that as you plan your journey ahead, you remember to walk in the light. We are called as children of God to remember that He has given us the tools to show us His path. During this summer vacation, take time to read your Bible, visit friends and family, and get organized for another year.
You don’t have to worry about having the entire path visible just now, but do remember to listen to God’s Word and let it light your path — even if it’s just one step at a time.
Department chairs are integral to the Liberty University Online Academy office and operations. Maria Dowdy-Pribble is the chair of the science department. Her duties include teaching science courses, helping the science teachers under her leadership, and developing new curriculum. She has been with Liberty Online Academy for three years and has taught at several other private Christian schools in the past. In preparing to teach, Mrs. Dowdy-Pribble earned a bachelor’s degree in biology, a master’s degree in counseling, and is presently finishing up coursework for her Doctor of Education.
Mrs. Dowdy-Pribble has been married to her husband, Todd, for 20 years. Her family also includes her 13-year-old son, Nikolai, a puggle named Eleanor Roosevelt, two ball pythons (Chewie and Ted), and two turtles.
When she is not working hard at the academy, Mrs. Dowdy-Pribble loves to travel and enjoys reading. She likes to collect bobble heads and rocks from different countries.
Mrs. Dowdy-Pribble’s favorite verse is Luke 23:43, “And He said to him, ‘Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.’”
We appreciate all she does for other teachers and her students, and we are glad to have her as part of our team.
You Ask, We Answer
Q: Are there any breaks (e.g. Christmas, Spring Break, etc.) scheduled in the curriculum?
A: Every year we schedule a one-week break the week of Thanksgiving and two weeks off for Christmas. Because our students are located all over the world, we do not actually have a Spring Break put into the curriculum. We want our students to be able to take their Spring Breaks whenever they want to. Some students choose to take this break at the same time as their friends in local schools. Our curriculum allows flexibility in choosing when to complete schoolwork and when to take a vacation.

Missionary families are a big part of the Liberty Online Academy community. The Abbetts have lived in France since 1998. Two of their children take courses through the academy. John Marc is a junior and Chloe is a sophomore. They have two younger sisters, Claire and Emily, who were both born in France. The younger siblings are still in French schools.
The Abbetts live 30 kilometers south of Paris (about 18.6 miles). Mr. Abbett is a pastor, and the congregation will soon be moving to its own building. Unfortunately, France is a very secular society, with humanistic views. Many people claim to be atheists and do not even know the basics of the Bible. Less than one percent of the French people are born-again Christians.
John Marc enjoys biking long distances and rollerblading. He plays the guitar and his sister Chloe plays the piano. Chloe also enjoys the trampoline and playing badminton. John Marc likes the flexibility that Liberty Online Academy provides, and Chloe appreciates the opportunity to work on her English skills and the time to prepare for a university in the United States. They found out about Liberty Online Academy when visiting Lynchburg, Va., while on furlough in 2010. John Marc hopes to attend a university in the United States and be involved in a biking club. Chloe plans to also come back to the states for schooling and is interested in traveling. We are glad the Abbetts are part of the Liberty Online Academy family!
