Course Description

This course focuses on the development of a body systems approach to health assessment of individuals emphasizing normal growth and developmental responses across the lifespan. Content includes an introduction to the knowledge and skills of health assessment through a variety of methodologies in the classroom, opportunities to practice skills in the nursing laboratory and experiences in the clinical settings. Students apply communication techniques in eliciting comprehensive health histories and perform physical examinations in evaluating health status.

Rationale

The professional nurse is often called upon to make independent decisions regarding the resolution of patient care problems. This course serves as an introduction to patient assessment. Normal physical and developmental processes must be understood in order to recognize abnormal responses.

Discussions (3)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 250 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 1 scholarly resource and 1 Scripture reference in current APA format. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words. Both replies must reference 1 scholarly source, and at least 1 of the replies must cite the textbook to support the student’s assertions. Acceptable sources include the course textbook, other nursing or medical textbooks, scholarly, peer-reviewed research journal articles, the Bible, and reliable websites (generally .org, .gov, or .edu sites are acceptable; avoid .com sites, blogs, social media).

Quizzes: Shadow Health (4)

Shadow Health provides virtual clinical simulation designed to improve student assessment skills in a safe learning environment. Students will examine digital patients throughout the course.  Required Shadow Health Assignments include Digital Clinical Experience Orientation, Conversation Concept Lab, Health History, and Digital Clinical Experiences (DCEs) for HEENT, Abdominal, and Neurological Systems.  Optional concept labs will also be available to support the student learning experience.

A minimum score of 85% is required for each graded assignment; students may continue to work on each assignment until the required score is achieved. Because the exams are in-depth, these assignments will often take over an hour to complete, so it is important to plan enough time to complete each assignment.

You will be asked to upload a Lab Pass (pdf) after completing each Shadow Health assignment.  Your Lab Pass can be generated from the Experience Overview Page after completing your assignment.

Assessment Video Assignments (3)

Students will demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to perform a comprehensive physical assessment for an adult client by recording and submitting three Assessment Video Assignments, each of which include a portion of a comprehensive assessment, throughout the term. A summative, comprehensive assessment video will be required at the end of the term. During each video, students will demonstrate psychomotor (hands-on) skills while verbalizing assessment findings using accurate medical terminology. Addtionally, students will be required to utilize nursing equipment (such as an otoscope and tuning forks) as listed in the course syllabus and online bookstore.

Credit will not be given for portions requiring special equipment if students choose not to use required equipment.

Assessment Video Assignments are clinical components of the course. Satisfactory completion with a minimum 70% score on each clinical component (i.e. the content portion of each video) is required to earn a passing grade for the course.

Students are required to film and submit a video of a Comprehensive Physical Exam (head-to-toe assessment) of a consenting adult age 18 or older.During the video, students will demonstrate psychomotor (hands-on) skills while verbalizing assessment findings using accurate medical terminology. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned modules: weeks. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a time limit of 2 hours.
