Liberty debuts new camp facility

September 11, 2013  |  Lena Wakim/Liberty University News Service

Liberty University students gathered at Camp Hydaway on Saturday to celebrate the grand opening of the facility on nearby Liberty Mountain. Students relaxed by the beach, hung out with friends, and enjoyed several outdoor activities, including kayaking, swimming, hiking, and mountain biking. The event was hosted by Liberty’s Student Activities office, which provided free snacks and inflatables.

The camp, which was purchased last year from Thomas Road Baptist Church, is located about two miles from campus. The church will continue to operate its youth camps there in the summer. The 20-acre property with a 6.4-acre lake offers a variety of recreational activities for students such as a beach area, giant water slide, ropes course, hiking/biking trails, ATV track, and multiple campsites. It also features two newly renovated buildings — the Student Center, a large building with a kitchen, eating area, and pavilion that will be available for club meetings, leadership training, and other activities, and the Outfitter, a smaller building that houses several items for rental, including ATVs, mountain bikes, kayaks, fishing poles, and camping gear.
