Liberty set to host Fulbright Scholar workshop
March 10, 2011 | Ron BrownLiberty University will host a Fulbright Student and Scholar workshop on March 29 (2-3 p.m. and 4-5 p.m.) and 30 (8:30-9:30 a.m. and noon-1 p.m.) in the Supreme Courtroom at the School of Law.
These informational meetings are open to faculty, staff, students and alumni of Liberty University. A Fulbright representative will be available for individual meetings outside the workshop times.
The Fulbright Scholar Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The Fulbright program has provided almost 300,000 participants, chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential, with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) assists in the administration of the Fulbright Scholar Program for Faculty and professionals.
Once a scholar is accepted, the entire cost of the program is covered by the State Department. The cost includes transportation and stipend, and also includes housing for scholars. Students receive a stipend to cover housing.
As part of the program, Liberty can host Fulbright scholars on campus. The cost of the scholar at Liberty would be covered by Fulbright.
Current Liberty University School of Law Professor Edna Udobong received a Fulbright scholarship to study in Africa in 2008-2009. She was also the recipient of the 1995 Harvard Law School Reginald Lewis Human Rights Award award recipient.
Udobong is multi-lingual and has lectured in Italy and Nigeria.
As a member of the review panel for the 2010-2011 Humphrey and Fulbright Scholar programs in the United States, Udobong served the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
“The Fulbright experience left an indelible, positive mark in my life and career, allowing me to develop an incredible network of contacts from Africa and beyond,” Udobong said. “I learned much from the students I taught and continue to be in touch with after my award year ended.”
