The Liberty University LaHaye Student Union hosted its first health fair Monday, presenting students several wellness opportunities both around campus and in the community. Visitors enjoyed health screenings, free samples, prizes, and plenty of information to help jump-start their wellness routines.

The Health Fair highlighted campus-wide opportunities such as the Campus Garden and Student Activities. Community groups, including Blackwater Bike Shop and Live Healthy Lynchburg, an initiative supported by Liberty, presented ways students could live healthier while exploring the Lynchburg area.

“I wanted to get a lot of different health-promoting activities around campus in one room,” said alumna Jamie Swyers (’11), associate director of fitness at LaHaye Student Union, who organized the event. “Obviously, students know that we have a fitness facility at the LaHaye Student Union — it’s fairly popular — but it’s good to be able to promote different activities.”

The LaHaye Student Union provides students with various opportunities to live healthier lives through group exercise programs, personal trainers, and activities such as the Wellness Series, a three-part series that teaches students how to eat, train, and live healthier. The union also gives current students in the Exercise Science program opportunities to work and gain career experience.

Students of Liberty’s Department of Nursing utilized the opportunity to fulfill some of their clinical hours. Three groups of nursing students managed tables and discussed skin and heart health as well as disaster relief.

“This was an opportunity for students to put knowledge into practice by helping their fellow students understand their own health and how to better take care of themselves in the present and future,” said Rachel Mills, assistant professor of nursing.
