Women’s basketball team celebrates successful season

The Liberty University women’s basketball team celebrated another successful season Wednesday night during an annual awards banquet at the Hancock Welcome Center. All seven outgoing seniors from the team were honored and Lady Flames standout Devon Brown learned that she had been named Richmond Times-Dispatch State Women’s Player of the Year.

More than 120 were in attendance, including Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr., who showed his support for what has historically been “the most successful athletic team at Liberty.”

“Becki and I were honored to attend last night. We are so proud of Head Coach Carey Green and the girls for representing Liberty University so well, both on and off the court,” Falwell said.

Director of Athletics Jeff Barber also attended. He said the Lady Flames “have done a tremendous job over the years.”

“Their hard work, under the direction of Coach Green and his staff, has led to many conference titles. In almost every season for nearly two decades, they have competed on collegiate basketball’s largest stage — the NCAA Tournament — including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2005,” Barber said. “Their success is a culmination of Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr.’s vision for a world-class university with athletic teams competing at the highest level. He always said, ‘if it’s Christian it ought to be better,’ and this talented group of young ladies definitely reflects the excellence and Christ-like attitude he envisioned.”

This season, Liberty (27-7, 16-2 Big South) won its second-straight Big South Conference title and its 15th in the last 17 years. The Lady Flames finished the season as a No. 13 seed in their 15th NCAA Tournament appearance with a loss to 4-seed Purdue. LU finished No. 16 in the Mid-Major Top 25 and topped the entire NCAA in rebound margin for the second-straight year.
