Liberty launches more alumni chapters

June 1, 2009 : Teresa Dunham

Liberty University alumni chapters are quickly spreading across the nation. Just last month, the Alumni Relations Office launched three new chapters in Florida, Pennsylvania and Richmond.

The Richmond launch on May 28 brought LU’s number of active chapters up to nine. More than 55 alumni, along with 12 Liberty faculty and staff members, attended the event held at Grove Avenue Baptist Church. The evening included dinner, as well as speeches from chapter leader Jon Manson (in red shirt at right) and from area alumnus Tim Scarborough, a television broadcaster for the Flames Network.

The Richmond Alumni Chapter is excited about promoting LU to local schools and churches, said Senior Alumni Officer Mark Watkins. He was pleased that several groups stayed after the event, continuing to talk and reminisce about their days at Liberty. The chapter already has its second event planned — a picnic in early August — and they are making plans to attend the 2009 Alumni Weekend together.

By the end of this year, LU hopes to launch a total of 15 active chapters. The next launch is June 19 in Dallas, Texas.

Additionally, the Alumni Relations Office is starting a program to reconnect with alumni residing in zip codes starting with 245 – the largest group of LU alumni. The first “245 Initiative” event is slated for Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Liberty University campus. Those alumni and their families will enjoy free use of facilities including the LaHaye Student Union, LaHaye Ice Center, Tilley Student Center, the new Thomas Indoor Soccer Center, and the East Campus clubhouse and outdoor pool. Food and drinks will be provided.
