Accrediting agency committee reviews new Ph.D. program

April 2, 2009 : University Advancement staff

Liberty University is just a few steps away from being classified as a Level VI institution by its institutional accrediting agency, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). This is the highest classification and is reserved for colleges/universities that offer four or more doctoral degrees.

The university currently offers a Doctor of Education, a Ph.D. in Counseling and two doctoral degrees through Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary: the Doctor of Ministry and the new Ph.D. in Theology and Apologetics, the latter of which underwent a review this week by a committee appointed by the Commission on Colleges of SACS.

Dr. Boyd Rist, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, said the SACS visit went well. “In the exit interview, SACS representatives complimented Liberty University on establishing the program, and for the quality of the Ph.D. faculty,” he said.

The university will respond to a small number of recommendations SACS officials made, which will, in turn, be reviewed according to procedures established by the Commission on Colleges, he said. When those recommendations are satisfied, the university will receive the Level VI classification.

SACS is an accreditation organization that accredits both private and public schools in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and certain locations outside the U.S.
