Dr. Harold Willmington began his 41st year of teaching at Liberty University today. This makes him the longest serving member of Liberty’s faculty to date.
Willmington has spent more than half of his life at Liberty, where he founded Liberty’s Bible certificate program, now Willmington School of the Bible.
Willmington was invited by Liberty co-founder Dr. Elmer Towns to start Liberty Bible Institute as a campus program in 1972. In 1976, he started the home correspondence course, Liberty Home Bible Institute, which became the world’s largest correspondence diploma program on the Bible.
He is a man of many occupations, including pastor, teacher, dean, and author of 20 books. His Bible education book, “Willmington’s Guide to the Bible,” with more than 350,000 copies distributed, has been in print for more than 30 years and has been used by hundreds of thousands of people from every walk of life to help navigate the Bible.
Willmington and his wife, Sue, have been married for 51 years. Sue teaches sign language and interpreting at Liberty. Their son, Matt, is the associate pastor of ministry development and family ministries at Thomas Road Baptist Church.
