High enrollment a sign of success

More than 400 students who applied to Liberty University for the Fall 2008 semester were put on a waiting list starting July 1. The move was a first for Liberty, as high enrollment numbers prompted officials to set the June 30 cut-off date for enrollment for Fall 2008 to allow for facilities and staffing to catch up with current growth.

On June 30, admissions counselors with Liberty’s Resident Recruitment Department handled 1,577 calls from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m.

Liberty should hit record enrollment this fall, with an estimated 11,300 students (including 3,500 new students). That is an 8 percent increase over last year.

Chris Johnson, executive director of Resident Recruitment for Liberty, said the numbers are “right on target” and that setting an enrollment deadline was a positive step.

“From a university standpoint, we don’t need to be a second, third, fourth choice out there,” he said. “We’re moving in a direction where we are becoming the first choice for parents who want to send their students to a place where they are going to get a solid, Christian education.”

He said those on the waiting list have already been notified and will be contacted by the university over the next few weeks regarding the possibility of being fully enrolled in the fall.
