Construction begins on new tennis complex

Crews are currently clearing an area of land located behind Campus North in preparation of Liberty’s upcoming tennis center. Once the bulk grading is completed, construction will begin on a new 12-court complex, accommodating the university’s NCAA Division I men’s and women’s tennis teams.

“We are going to build (the courts) as quickly as humanly possible,” said LU’s Director of Auxiliary Services Lee Beaumont, who hopes to have the project completed by mid-spring.

Last month, workers demolished LU’s previous facility, the Esbenshade-Hershey Tennis Center, making way for a gated faculty parking lot below Reber-Thomas Dining Hall. The future complex is a four-court upgrade from the former and will allow Liberty to host conference tournaments and invitationals.

Lady Flames tennis experienced its most successful year in program history this past spring, rounding out the 2008 campaign with a 13-4 record. The men also finished strong, taking seven of their final 10 regular season matches.
