Hundreds beat the heat at Snowflex Centre

More than 500 people hit the slopes at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, Liberty University’s year-round ski, snowboard and tubing facility, over the weekend to beat the heat after days without power. All activities were free to the public.

The center closed for repairs after Friday, June 29, when severe windstorms left close to three-fourths of Lynchburg, Va., area residents without power for much of the week. As temperatures continued to hover near 100, crews worked to bring Snowflex back into operation. It reopened on Thursday, July 5, with free admission offered through Sunday.

“It was great to see the people taking advantage of the facility in light of the heat because it’s important for people to not only have fun but to stay cool as well,” said Drew Sherwood, general manager.

Another Community Day is planned for this Saturday, July 14. All activities will be free to the public.

Liberty also offered free skating at LaHaye Ice Center last week. The LaHaye Student Union greeted thousands of guests who used restrooms, showers, and computers. Liberty also opened the third floor of the football stadium tower and the indoor track as cooling stations.

Liberty’s laundry facilities were made available to the public and more than 1,800 people were housed in residence halls. About 100 of them were out-of-area electrical workers unable to find hotel rooms when they arrived in town to respond to the outage.

Sodexo, the school’s dining services provider, opened up the campus dining hall to the public, offering meals at $3 for adults; kids and emergency services workers ate for free. More than 15,000 meals were served. Bags of ice were also distributed.
