David Barton speaks at Constitution Day convocation

Wednesday’s convocation service took place on the 221st anniversary of the United States Constitution. It was fitting, then, that David Barton, founder and president of WallBuilders and one of Time Magazine’s “25 most influential American evangelicals,” was invited to speak to the student body.

WallBuilders is an organization dedicated to preserving America’s strong religious, moral and constitutional heritage by educating citizens about the crucial role played by the Christian faith in the founding and development of the nation.

Barton’s message to the student body touched on many of these themes. He began by noting the phenomenon of American exceptionalism—the fact that America is one of the very few world nations that has not undergone a revolution every 20 or 30 years and suggested that this was due to the strength of the Constitution.

He also noted that primary sources from the Constitutional Convention reveal that prayer was an important and central part of the proceedings.

Barton brought up the importance of looking to the Bible for guidance when deciding how to vote in the upcoming presidential election; there are about 40 issues of disagreement between the two major political parties, and the Bible has something clear to say about all these issues, he said.

He also suggested that Christians should support faith-based initiatives rather than aid programs that are run and funded by the federal government: “Any time the church and the people get together to meet needs, needs get met.”
