Gov. Tim Kaine speaks on behalf of Obama campaign

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine visited Liberty University during Monday convocation, representing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. As co-chairman of the Obama campaign, Kaine shared his views on the candidate, while addressing the economy, abortion and gay rights.

“I have a real heart for people, who though they may have wonderful opportunities, decide to dedicate their gifts and talents to serving the least of these,” Kaine said. “And that really expresses at the core who I think Barack Obama is, a person of strong faith and values who wants to watch out for the least of these.”

The governor also noted Obama’s desire to financially assist the middle class, conduct peaceful negotiations with foreign leaders, reduce abortions and protect the basic rights of all citizens. Before exiting the podium he called for Americans to come together as a nation during tough times and “find the intersection of our views.”

“I am sure that everyone here believes we are in a very fundamental and challenging time,” he said. “We are going to need not just the best of all of us but we’re also going to need God’s grace to get through the challenges we have.”

Kaine was inaugurated as Virginia’s 70th governor on Jan. 14, 2006, becoming the first since Thomas Jefferson to be inaugurated at the Colonial Capital in Williamsburg, Va. Before being elected, Kaine worked alongside former Gov. Mark Warner as lieutenant governor. During his days as a Harvard law student, he took a year off to serve as a missionary in Honduras.
