Representatives speak to students about working in missions

Liberty University has welcomed more than 100 representatives from over 50 missionary sending organizations for Missions Emphasis Week (MEW), Feb. 16-20. Missions booths have been set up around campus with representatives ready to speak to students about how they can play a more active role in missions.

Kimberly Love, an inquiry coordinator from Serving in Mission, said her organization has been coming to Liberty during MEW for the past seven years. This week she met with students ranging from nursing and education majors to ministry and youth pastors.

“I think it’s been great for awareness and just counseling people down the mission’s road,” she said.

John’ae Davis, a junior government major at Liberty, said the representatives who come during MEW aid students who have an interest in missions but do not know how to take the first step.

“Every year we get new students who may not have heard about how to become involved in missions. This helps raise awareness about going out into different parts of the country,” she said.

Peter Copeland, a resort missionary with North American Mission Board, said this is his second year of recruiting at Liberty’s MEW.

“It’s a good opportunity to be available to hear [students’] passions and their call to ministry,” he said. “We want to place people in ministry opportunities that they want to be in and that they feel equipped for.”

Copeland also said he enjoys traveling and speaking with college students because they have flexible summer schedules to serve in church planting, ministering or working in the inner city.

“This is a good opportunity to educate students and get them interested,” he said.

The missions booths are currently set up on the first floor of DeMoss Hall and at the main entrance of Campus North and representatives will be available until 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20.
