Two teams from Liberty University School of Law competed at the Leroy R. Hassell, Sr. National Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition at Regent University Feb. 17-18, winning a first-place honor and several awards.

The competition included 13 teams from 10 schools who competed in a simulated federal circuit court in front of prominent local and national judges and attorneys. They presented arguments on the validity of state enforcement of federal immigration laws.

The Liberty team of Brian Giaquinto and John Mark Becton won first place and an award for second Best Brief. They defeated teams from Brigham-Young University, Howard University, the University of Albany-State University of New York and Elon University, and posted three wins over William & Mary to finish with a perfect 7-0 record.

Also at the competition, Charity Katze won the award for Best Oralist and Giaquinto won for third Best Oralist.

The team of Katze and Scott Stier advanced to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by the runner-up team from the College of William & Mary.

The teams were coached by Dean Rena Lindevaldsen and Professor Scott Thompson.

“The tournament was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that Liberty University School of Law students perform at the highest levels of legal scholarship in comparison to other law schools across the country,” Giaquinto said. “Professor Thompson’s and Dean Lindevaldsen’s coaching were critical to help us manage the stress of the tournament and to secure the victory.”
