Liberty Sponsors Local Semi-Professional Basketball Team

Continuing in its commitment to athletic excellence and community involvement, Liberty University announced plans this week to be the title sponsor of the Lynchburg Legends, a local semi-professional basketball team for 2012.

“God has blessed the University and we want to give back to the community,” said Lee Beaumont, director of Auxiliary Services. “We feel the Legends are providing a valuable community service and activity and the school is proud to sponsor this organization.”

A member of the American Basketball Association (ABA), the Legends began their inaugural year in November and is currently ranked No. 24 according to ABA power rankings.

In addition to sharing their love for the game of basketball, the mission of the Lynchburg Legends is to provide family-friendly entertainment within the local community. The team currently maintains service partnerships with the Boys and Girls Club of Lynchburg, the Salvation Army, and the Jubilee Family Development Center, seeking to positively impact the lives of children and sports enthusiasts within the community.

The Legends also have close ties to Liberty. The team’s General Manager and CEO, Derek Polley is a 2011 graduate of Liberty University and player Damien Hubbard is a former forward for the Flames.
