Longtime supporter gives final gift of $590,000
Liberty University has received a $590,000 bequest from the estate of W. Russel Hoerner of Mechanicsburg, Pa., who died Jan. 8, 2011 at the age of 89.
Hoerner, a lawyer, was a longtime supporter of Liberty and its related ministries. Before the bequest, he had donated more than $300,000. He contributed to many university projects, including Regents Parkway (the perimeter road along the western border of campus) and the Tower Theater.
Hoerner did not specify how the bequest should be used.
Tom Arnold, Liberty’s Vice President for Development, said Hoerner had contributed financially to the university since the 1980s. Hoerner had never visited campus, but had met with Arnold and Earl Sargeant, director of Liberty’s Planned Giving Department, in his home.
“He liked Dr. Jerry Falwell and the political stands he would take,” Arnold said. “He was a private individual, but a great friend of the ministry for many years.”
