Chaplaincy director named to national Armed Forces conference

On Jan. 15, Dr. Steven Keith, director of the Liberty University Center for Chaplaincy, was announced as an Executive Counsel Member of the National Conference on Ministry to the Armed Forces (NCMAF).

“This will put Liberty at the table with the decision makers and overseers in this group and give us direct access to the chiefs of chaplains to the Army, Navy, and Air Force,” Keith said.

According to the NCMAF website, the organization is the point of contact between the Department of Defense and over 150 religious denominations and faith groups. The group “recruits, endorses, and provides oversight for clergy-persons who desire to serve as chaplains in any one of the branches of our Armed Forces.”

Keith said the opportunity to represent Liberty through NCMAF is an honor for the university and has the potential to positively impact the chaplains he endorses.

“I endorse about 300 chaplains to the U.S. military,” said Keith, who is the chaplain endorser for Liberty Baptist Fellowship. “Our group is one of the larger groups in the association.”

Liberty students pursuing a career in chaplaincy are in good hands with Keith at the helm. The former Air Force chaplain was awarded a Bronze Star for exceptional ministry while under fire in Iraq. During his 30-year military chaplaincy tenure (1984-2014), Keith traveled the world to share Christ’s love to those on the front lines.

Keith and his wife Delta are the proud parents of five children and five grandchildren.
