Sound designer wins Emmy for work on Liberty’s ‘Game On’ TV show

Liberty University sound designer Alex Short has received an Emmy for his work with “Game On,” the 30-minute weekly sports television program produced by the Liberty Flames Sports Network. Short won in the Sound Design and Audio Mix category for a 90-second compilation of clips from the show.

Short received the award at the National Capital Chesapeake Bay chapter’s 61st National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Emmy Awards, held at the Marriott Convention Center in Bethesda, Md., on Saturday.

“Alex’s work takes our show to another level, and over the years he’s had a huge hand in the success that we’ve had,” said “Game On” anchor Matt Warner. “It’s always great to see our people recognized for the incredible work that they do. I look forward to seeing him go for a three-peat at next year’s Emmys.”

Short earned his first Emmy last year, also for audio work for “Game On.” (Last year, “Game On” staff received four Emmys out of a record seven nominations.) This year, the staff also received nominations in The Show in Sports program and Play by Play categories, for Warner’s live coverage of Liberty’s basketball and football teams.

“That first Emmy kind of motivated me,” Short said. “I always try hard and look forward to going to work.”

Short moved from Atlanta, where he worked in the film and TV industry, and has worked on the audio design and mix of “Game On” since the show’s first episode on Feb. 3, 2014.

“It started off as a daily show, and we just finished our 200th episode as a weekly show last week,” Short said. “I have been the show’s sound designer since the very beginning, mixing the audio on their feature stories and packages — all the music and transitions and effects.”

Short thanked the 12 members of his team and recognized his family on hand at the awards ceremony.

“I love the team I work with and I love the show and what we’ve built it into over the past 5½ years,” he said. “It took a lot of prayer there at the beginning and now things are running great.”

Short and Game On co-anchor Rett McGibbon were the only staff members present at the award ceremonies, but he credits his entire team for producing a top-quality show.

“Everyone deserves it,” Short said. “I really hope everyone gets to go next year, more than I hope to get to go myself.”

He added that being at the awards show was a bit out of his comfort zone: “I don’t like the lights on me, being in front of the camera,” he said. “I work in a black, windowless room where nobody sees me. That’s the nature of the job, working with sound.”
