Liberty Athletics claims 14th Sasser Cup title

For the third year in a row and the record 14th time overall, Liberty University Athletics earned the Big South Conference’s (BSC) George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup title, announced during Thursday’s BSC Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Seven Flames teams captured Big South Conference championships during the 2017-18 athletics season: men’s golf, women’s basketball, softball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, and women’s outdoor track & field. Additionally, the women’s soccer squad shared the Big South regular-season title.

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former BSC Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the school experiencing the most successful athletic year, based on a points system.

Liberty finished with an average of 8.85 points (159.25 points in 18 sports), winning the Sasser Cup by an average of 0.54 points over runner-up Campbell (8.31 average, 149.5 points in 18 sports). The Lady Flames finished second to High Point in the Big South Women’s All-Sports Standings and the Flames were runners-up behind Campbell in the Big South Men’s All-Sports Standings.

“This has been another outstanding year of competition in the Big South,” Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw said. “We are blessed to have won the Sasser Cup for the 14th time and captured seven conference championships. I am grateful for the strong commitment and support from President Falwell and the outstanding efforts of our coaches, staff, and student-athletes. God has shown us much favor.”

This was the final year for Liberty to compete for the Big South’s all-sports award as conference membership for 17 of its programs will move to the ASUN Conference starting with the 2018-19 athletics season.
