Quiz Bowl team captures another Big South championship

(From left) Jake Rogers, Catherine Hardee, Corbin Payne (captain), Dr. Jim Nutter (coach), Andrea Teachout, and Lillian Otieno show off their Big South championship awards.

For the fifth time in six years, the Liberty University Quiz Bowl team has won the Big South Conference championship.

Liberty defeated five teams by an average margin of 204 points on the way to a shutout. Senior Catherine Hardee led the way for Liberty with 261 points. The tournament was held at Coastal Carolina.

“This is perhaps the strongest Quiz Bowl team that Liberty has ever produced,” coach Jim Nutter said.

It is the second time in the five championships that Liberty has gone undefeated in the tournament. The previous shutout win was in 2006.

“God has blessed our team with some great minds,” Nutter said. “Our diligence and discipline paid off.”

In addition to the Big South title, Liberty has beaten some high-profile Atlantic Coast Conference schools this year, including a victory at Duke in their own tournament. The team also defeated N.C. State four times this season, Nutter said.

Next up for Liberty is the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) on Feb. 5 at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. Schools taking part in that tournament include South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech and William & Mary.
