Flames Football starts transition to FBS level Saturday at Baylor

Liberty University Football begins the transition from Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to Football Bowl Championship (FBS) play in a big way Saturday, traveling to Baylor University in Waco, Texas, for its season-opener against the Bears.

For the fifth time in Head Coach Turner Gill’s six seasons at the helm, the Flames will open their season against an FBS opponent. Liberty will be shooting for its first victory over a Big 12 opponent and fifth triumph over an FBS foe.

While this is a first-time meeting, Liberty has ties to Baylor, with Flames first-year Athletics Director Ian McCaw serving in the same capacity for the Bears from 2003-16. Also, Liberty Assistant Coach Josh Bookbinder, who works with the Flames’ linebackers, is a 2009 Baylor graduate and the grandson of legendary Bears football coach Grant Teaff.

Watch a weekly press conference with Gill, looking back at the August Training Camp and ahead to Saturday’s opener, and read a preview package with more information on the game.

Regional television coverage, provided through FS2, will start at 7 p.m. (EST) at McLane Stadium; check your local cable listings for station information. A live radio broadcast from Liberty Flames Sports Network will be aired on The Journey (88.3 FM in Lynchburg; listen live online or check the site for other stations across Virginia and North Carolina).

Tickets are still available for next Saturday’s home opener at Williams Stadium, where the Flames will host Morehead State at 6 p.m. Call (434) 582-SEAT (7328) or visit tickets@liberty.edu.
