Liberty sponsors food drive; get in free to football game

Liberty University is partnering with Gleaning for the World to gather food for those in need across Central Virginia. Students have been collecting food during convocation in the Vines Center this week, and this weekend there will be a chance for the greater Lynchburg community to get involved. Anyone who brings five cans or boxes of non-perishable food items to the last home football game of the season on Saturday will receive one free admission.

The Rev. Ron Davidson, president and CEO of Gleaning for the World, spoke briefly at Monday’s convocation.

“Half of the children in this community need food. … Bring in five cans of food …. and we’re going to use it to feed the people in the Lynchburg, Roanoke, Danville area,” he said.

Gleaning For The World is hoping the Feeding Our Neighbors food drive will be its largest food donation to date. The goal is to send up to 1 million meals to families in need in Central Virginia and other areas served by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

Gleaning for the World, headquartered in Concord, Va., announced a merger with Thomas Road Baptist Church last year. Liberty students have done volunteer work with GFTW through Liberty’s Christian/Community Service Department and through TRBC. Students have done everything from loading trucks with supplies for hurricane victims to donating money to help send medical supplies to children’s AIDS clinics in Africa. Forbes.com has recognized GFTW as the nation’s top charity in terms of fundraising efficiency and charitable commitment.
