Flight team wins regional competition

The Liberty University School of Aeronautics flight competition team won the National Intercollegiate Flight Association (NIFA) Region 10 competition for the seventh consecutive year.

The win qualifies them for nationals in May 2012 at Kansas State University, where they will compete against nearly 70 schools.

This year’s Region 10 competition was hosted by Franklin Municipal Airport in Franklin, Va., Oct. 27-29 and included teams from Averett University, Caldwell Community College, Elizabeth City State University, Guilford Technical Community College, and Hampton University.

At the competition, Liberty debuted its newest addition to their team: the Cessna 162 SkyCatcher.  It proved itself by placing first in short field landings and second in power-off landings.

Dave Young, Dean of Liberty University School of Aeronautics, said the team will be “in full preparation mode” for the national competition, resuming practices before Christmas break, two to three times a week.

“This team has heart,” he said. “They are an example of, ‘If it’s Christian, it ought to be better’ and because of their outstanding performance as pilots they are respected even more as they share the message of Jesus Christ.”

Liberty University School of Aeronautics, offering specializations in commercial/corporate aviation, military, missions and helicopter aviation, as well as aircraft mechanic, has grown from four students in 2002 to more than 570 enrolled in residential and online courses for the Fall 2011 semester.
