Alumna manages Wisconsin congressional campaign

In the United States, democracy provides citizens with the privilege of influencing the outcome of political elections. This election season, Liberty alumna Krystal Tucker (’09) has come to value the voting process even more. She is managing the congressional campaign for Republican Reid Ribble’s bid for the 8th District seat in Wisconsin, a daunting task she didn’t foresee in her future.

After graduating from Liberty with a Master of Arts in Christian Leadership, Tucker was slated for a career in the field of gerontology; however, she says the Lord had other plans for her life.

“I love a challenge and adventure, so I wanted to take the job,” she said. “To move to somewhere where I never thought I would live and do a job I never thought I would do, it was exciting.

Tucker was inspired to take a different career path by Ribble, who is also new to politics. Ribble sold his small roofing business in Wisconsin to enter the political arena and fulfill a need for politicians committed to upholding values — a step Tucker felt led to emulate.

“Reid chose to run for office because he is concerned about the future of America for his grandchildren,” said Tucker. “When I saw the care and concern in his eyes, it awakened a sense of responsibility in me about my role as an American.”

Through her work on Ribble’s campaign, Tucker has found herself challenged to explore and solidify her own political views, something she says every citizen should embrace.

“You have to realize that the decisions the government make affect every area of your life,” she said. “Those decisions affect your job and even what you buy at the store.”

Tucker encourages voters to claim their right to be a part of our country’s political system and vote for candidates who support values during the 2010 elections.

“Look at your life and the things that matter to your family, and start realizing that there is someone who is supposed to be a voice for you in Washington. Then give yourself a voice by voting for the right candidate who is going to make the right choice for America,” she said.

In addition to facing heated political debates and arduous days on the campaign trail, Tucker faced an even greater challenge while working on Ribble’s campaign — adjusting to the frigid Wisconsin winter.
“I live on a lake here and it freezes entirely and becomes a city of its own,” Tucker said. “That is so foreign to me growing up in the South.”

Icy temperatures aside, Tucker has enjoyed new experiences, established new skills, and cultivated a personal sense of ownership in the political process.

“I have seen parts of the country and met people that I never would have otherwise,” she said. “Each of those experiences has enriched me more and more every day.”
