UPDATE: Students win six of eight district ADDY awards

The American Advertising Federation announced winners from the District 3 ADDY competition, with Liberty University reaping six of the eight collegiate awards. Liberty Department of Studio & Digital Arts (SADA) students claimed one of two gold student Addy Awards and five of the six silvers given.

“For our students to win the vast majority of ADDYs in the district is really impressive, especially considering the strength of the art schools in the district,” SADA Chair Todd Smith said. “Once again these accomplishments point to professional mentoring provided by SADA faculty and the quality of SADA programs. We’re very proud of our students’ accomplishments.”

Winners of gold awards automatically advance and silver award winners are eligible for submission to the national level of the ADDY competition, where winners will be announced June 10 in New Orleans.

Liberty wins Best of Show, numerous top awards at local advertising competition

03/15/2017

A lion’s share of ADDY awards presented last week at the Western Virginia Student Advertising Awards went to Liberty University Department of Studio & Digital Arts (SADA) students.

The awards honor advertising in all forms of media, from the traditional design of print publications to digital design, including consumer apps. Last week’s competition was the local level of The American Advertising Awards, hosted by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), the industry’s largest competition worldwide, drawing over 40,000 entries annually.

Senior Cody Davis earned the competition’s highest honor, Best of Show. In all, Liberty students received 26 ADDYs — 10 gold and 16 silver. (View a list of winners by category; student awards begin on Page 4.) Liberty competed against students from Radford University, Lynchburg College, Virginia Tech, and other institutions in the region, winning all but 14 student awards. Award winners who qualify for the next level of competition — district — will compete against schools across Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina March 31-April 2. (Gold award winners automatically advance, and silver winners are eligible for submission.)

Davis also took home two gold awards, the same number earned by fellow students Blake Embree and Chloe Trexler. Gold awards were also presented to Shannon LeBlanc, Thu Nguyen, Wesley Nifong, and Hannah Lynch (who also won a silver award).

“Since 2011, SADA students have won 271 ADDY awards. This is a pretty amazing accomplishment,” said Todd Smith, SADA chair. Liberty won 79 ADDYs and Student Best of Show at the local and district level last year. “We’re very proud of the accomplishments of these students. They’ve dedicated their time and talent to excellence in their craft, and it shows in the number of awards they’ve won.”

He said that student success can be attributed to a number of factors, including faculty mentoring, course content, frequent feedback, and opportunities to work with the most advanced hardware and software in the industry, such as Adobe Creative Cloud.

Eight Liberty SADA students also received recognition for their work in the annual Photographer’s Forum 2017 Best of College & High School Photography Contest. As finalists, their work will be featured in the upcoming hardcover publication from Photographer’s Forum. Liberty’s finalists were (click on names to see their images): Rachel Falwell, Cassandra Feldges, Jacob Higginbotham, Eric Killian, Carleen Long, Kristen Porterfield, Amber Tiller, and Charles Harrell.
