Students win first place in audio challenge at National Religious Broadcasters Convention

A team of Digital Media & Communication Arts (DMCA) students received first place in the 2017 Intercollegiate National Religious Broadcasters (iNRB) 24-hour audio challenge at the NRB Convention, held Feb. 27-March 2 in Orlando, Fla.

The team of four students had 24 hours to create a short radio drama complete with dialogue, sound effects, and music. They outperformed teams from other institutions, including North Greenville University, Louisiana College, University of Northwestern – St. Paul, and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

“I knew that this group would be able to win the award,” said DMCA Assistant Professor Kornel Gerstner, the team’s faculty advisor. “We’ve seen their creativity, dedication, and hard work in our classes.”

Another team of four DMCA students were also given the opportunity to participate in a 24-hour news challenge and demonstrate their skills by producing mock news broadcasts. As part of their assignment, the news team was able to connect with conference guests, including Lee and Leslie Strobel, creators of “The Case for Christ” story (which inspired the film) and producer Phil Cooke.

“They represented Liberty University well and were able to interview high-profile people during the challenge,” Gerstner said. “They were able to learn valuable lessons that are hard to teach in a classroom setting.”

While at the conference, the students attended a variety of workshops led by industry professionals, including FOX News host Sean Hannity and Christian author Jefferson Bethke.

Each year, iNRB hosts a series of meetings at the NRB Convention that allow students and faculty from institutions across the country to share ideas.
