NASCAR driver and LU student William Byron interviewed by FOX Sports

Liberty University freshman William Byron, a rookie driver with JR Motorsports (JRM) on NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, was featured on a FOX Sports video this month.

Filmed in February, before his official debut at Daytona International Speedway, Byron talks with Regan Smith about his transition from iRacing (a video simulation racing program), to the Camping World Truck Series (where he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2016), and now to the Xfinity Series. He also discusses his goal to race at the top level of NASCAR.

“Having good people around you, people that are going to encourage you and give you the right tools to succeed (is a key to success),” Byron said. “Briefly being at JRM, in the Xfinity Series, I’ve learned how many resources they’re giving me to succeed. It’s really a blessing, and it’s a great responsibility, too. Hopefully, the racing continues, and I keep getting more opportunities and try to progress myself to the (Monster Energy) Cup Series.”

The video showcases some scenes from around campus at Liberty University, Byron’s primary sponsor for his first three races in the series and 17 out of 33 total. Byron was also interviewed on Liberty’s campus for another FOX Sports feature last November.

Byron, who is continuing his education through Liberty’s online program after spending his first semester as a residential student, is the only regular in the series with two top-10 finishes. He was the highest-placing rookie in his first two starts.

He placed ninth in his Xfinity Series debut at the Powershares QQQ 300 on Feb. 25 at Daytona International Speedway. His seventh-place finish at the Rinnai 250 held March 4 at Atlanta Motor Speedway bumped him up to second in the Xfinity Series points standings. He placed 14th at this past Saturday’s Boyd Gaming 300 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway to slip to third in the standings, just nine points behind JRM teammate and series points leader Elliot Sadler.

This Saturday, Byron will compete in the DC Solar 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, televised on FOX starting at 4:15 p.m. (EST).
