Thelma Wells delivers convocation message

Author and professional speaker Thelma Wells challenged Liberty University students at Monday’s convocation to have victory over anxiety and obey the call of God on their lives.

Wells, founder of A Woman of God Ministries, has been speaking professionally for more than 30 years, sharing her testimony and encouraging women. As a child, she suffered abuse by her grandmother, and has used those experiences to help others. Wells has spoken at both the Extraordinary Women Conference and the Women of Faith Tour. She is the president of the Daughters of Zion Leadership Mentoring Program, which she founded in 2000. She has mentored more than 1,000 “spiritual daughters” through the program.

Wells began Monday’s message by sharing a story about when she was confined to her bed for nine days due to severe burns on her arm from an accident. During those days, Wells said, she became frustrated with God. She said that instead of telling God what we want, as if God does not already know, Christians should be sensitive and obedient to God’s will. She quoted Psalm 34:7, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Wells closed her message by reading from Philippians 4:6, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” She asked students to practice renewing their minds each day and to avoid being influenced in the wrong ways by keeping their focus on God at all times.

“If you’re worried and discontented, he already knows who you are, where you are, and every hair on your head. He already knows!” Wells said. “If you are fearful, listen — God did not give you a spirit of fear, he gave you a spirit of love and of power and of a sound mind.”

  • Wells lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband of more than 45 years. She has three children, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of North Texas in Dallas and her master’s degree from Master’s International School of Divinity in Evansville, Ind., where she also became the school’s first black professor in 2002. Wells has also received an honorary doctorate from St. Thomas Christian College in Jacksonville, Fla. She has authored several books, including “God is Not Through with Me Yet: Holding On to the One Who Holds You Close,” “Ready to Win over Worry and Anxiety,” and “Don’t Give In…God Wants You to Win!”
