LU Send Now to dispatch team to Georgia following major storm

LU Send Now, Liberty University’s disaster relief program, will send a team of 15 to Albany, Ga., to help with clean-up efforts following a powerful straight-line wind storm that occurred earlier this month.

The 12 students and three staff members will be partnering with Samaritan’s Purse to clean up debris and put tarps on roofs of homes throughout the affected area. The team will depart Wednesday and return Sunday, Jan. 22. Samaritan’s Purse will provide them with training once they arrive in Georgia.

Powerful thunderstorms ripped through Dougherty County in Georgia on Jan.8, damaging 1,500 to 2,000 homes and leaving thousands without power, the Albany Herald reported. The National Weather Service Tallahassee Office stated winds from the storm reached up to 85 mph. The storm was one of a series of powerful storms that affected three states.

Over the last year, LU Send Now teams have been dispatched to places such as Flint, Mich., to help with the water crisis, Baton Rouge, La., after devastating flooding, and the Carolinas following Hurricane Matthew.
