‘Voiceless’ actor promotes upcoming pro-life film

During Convocation on Monday, Liberty University students were given a sneak peek of the upcoming film, “Voiceless,” presented by its lead actor, Rusty Joiner. “Voiceless” hits select theaters on Oct. 7.

Set in Philadelphia, “Voiceless” tells the story of a recently discharged soldier named Jesse Dean (played by Joiner) who begins working as an outreach leader at a declining church. After he discovers that an abortion clinic operates directly across the street, Dean feels compelled to take a stand for what he believes is right, regardless of the resistance he receives or the consequences that come.

“It’s one man’s journey to stand up and fight for what he believes in, no matter what, because he’s not listening to his wife; he’s not listening to his community; he’s not listening to his job.  He’s listening to God,” Joiner said in an interview Monday morning. “We want to change people’s hearts. We want God to, hopefully, open your heart to do something, because if we all do something, we can change the world. We really can.”

As a Christian who works in Hollywood, Joiner explained in Convocation that he was drawn to “Voiceless” because of its bold message and how it will “change the way the world looks at abortion and being pro-life.”

“We wanted to make a truthful movie that is full of conviction and love,” he said. “There (are) an enormous amount of young girls in the world who are lost and lonely and broken and hurting, facing that decision.”

Encouraging students to see the film and promote it on social media, Joiner reminded them of the influence that they have on the world.

“You guys can make a difference; you guys literally are messengers for Christ,” he said. “You guys are the now; you guys are the future. You are going to change the way the world looks at life and (help them) see the way God defines life.”

While in Lynchburg, Joiner spoke to freshmen in LIberty’s Eagle Scholars Program, which trains high-achieving residential, undergraduate freshmen and sophomores for leadership.

“God wants to call all of you guys up as leaders,” Joiner told the group. “So whatever profession you choose, wherever you wind up going, whatever you do, you are going to be a leader. It will be Him, hopefully, working through us and ministering to people and teaching them. … Do it with love and kindness and try and change somebody’s life every single day. … Once you leave here, it is not all bubblegum and sunshine, and everybody loves you. When you are out there working, it is going to be a lot harder to do that and to find the boldness.”

Joiner shared his testimony with the students, explaining how he came to Christ at age 30 after his acting career and life in Hollywood failed to give him fulfillment. Since then, he said God has used him to minister to others on set. Joiner also gave a brief devotional on ambition from Proverbs 23, telling the students to set lofty goals in life but always keep Christ in front of them as they pursue those goals.
