Directors, producers to host screenings during annual film festival this weekend

The Liberty University Cinematic Arts, Zaki Gordon Center’s fifth-annual Premiere Weekend film festival includes four major theatrical screenings followed by filmmaker Q & As, as well as breakout sessions and panel discussions with movie industry leaders.

All events are free and open to the public.

The festival kicks the weekend off early with two motion picture screenings Thursday night at Regal River Ridge Stadium 14 (near Liberty’s campus). The supernatural thriller “Beyond the Darkness” will be screened at 6 p.m., followed by a Q & A with director Danny Carrales. At 8:30 p.m., the all-American western drama “Texas Rein,” a prodigal daughter story, will be shown, after which director Durrell Nelson will be available for questions.

Friday evening at Regal River Ridge, the family-friendly animal adventure “Oddball” will show at 6 p.m., with producer Sheila Hanahan Taylor on hand for a follow-up Q & A. At 8:30 p.m., the theatrical premiere of “God’s Compass,” winner of the 2016 International Christian Film Festival Best Screenplay award and the third feature film produced in cooperation with Liberty’s Cinematic Arts Department, will be featured. Liberty Cinematic Arts Executive Director Stephan Schultze, who wrote and directed the film, will close the evening with another Q & A session. (Read more about “God’s Compass” in the Liberty Journal.)

On Saturday, budding filmmakers will have the opportunity to hear from creators, producers, and distributors of film in back-to-back panel discussions in the LaHaye Multipurpose Center, followed by breakout sessions in the Green Hall cinematic arts classrooms. The first panel is from 9:40-10:45 a.m., featuring Andy Edmunds, director of the Virginia Film Office; Dave Mechem, partner at Working Title Agency; and Howard Baral, owner and director of production accounting at R.C. Baral and Company. The second panel is from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and features Taylor, Schultze, and Rich Peluso, senior vice president of Affirm Films/Sony Pictures.
