2016 Virginia Commonwealth Games kick off at Liberty

The first medals have been awarded in the 2016 Virginia Commonwealth Games as the first event of the state’s largest multi-sport festival kicked off at Liberty University on Saturday with the baton competition. Over 20 participants vied for gold, silver, and bronze medals inside Liberty’s LaHaye Multipurpose Center, enjoying the opportunity to take part in an event that returned after a year’s absence.

“(What) a great comeback,” said Virginia Amateur Sports (VAS) Games Director Amanda Mangum. “We were excited to be able to hold baton this year.”

Results will be finalized and posted to the Commonwealth Games website early next week.

This is the first year of a five-year deal to bring the Commonwealth Games to Lynchburg with Liberty as its title sponsor and primary facilities host. Over 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in over 55 Olympic and Pan American sports. The multi-sport festival is open to all ages and skill levels as a way to inspire wellness and competition.

“Partnering with LU has been a great experience,” Mangum said. “Being able to work with such wonderful, committed people and use such amazing venues allows us to prepare for another unforgettable year. We are excited about this opportunity for our athletes, families, coordinators, and volunteers.”

Next weekend in the Multipurpose Center, the Judo competition will take place, followed by ice hockey April 23-24 at the LaHaye Ice Center. The marquee event will be Main Games Weekend, July 22-24, with a large chunk of the competitions drawing thousands of athletes to campus.
