Liberty University to host simulated bioterrorism attack on Saturday

Liberty University’s Department of Biology & Chemistry is partnering with the Virginia State Police, the U.S. Army National Guard, the Virginia Department of Health, and the City of Lynchburg Fire Department for a simulated bioterrorism attack at the LaHaye Ice Center on Saturday, April 9.

Several members of the Virginia State Police and the U.S. Army National Guard will be on campus throughout the day.

The exercise is a hands-on learning opportunity for biology and chemistry students. They will be organized into teams and instructed on how to set up meters that are used by the police and first responders to detect biological, radiological, nuclear, and chemical agents. After a detailed training session, students will file into the LaHaye Ice Center, where specific targets and foggers will be set up to simulate the release of a radiological and biological agent.

The Virginia State Police and the U.S. Army National Guard were on campus on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. for an information training session with students about the various equipment they will be using at Saturday’s event.
