Liberty community holds vigil to celebrate the life of student killed in hiking accident

Dylan EngelOn Thursday, Liberty University held a prayer vigil on the front steps of DeMoss Hall to remember the life of Dylan Engel, a senior who fell to his death in a hiking accident at Apple Orchard Falls in Botetourt County, Va., on Wednesday.

About 100 people gathered, singing hymns and worship songs and listening as some close friends shared stories of how Engel had impacted their lives. They took comfort in knowing that Engel had a strong relationship with Jesus Christ and is now in Heaven.

Engel was well-regarded in the Liberty community. He is remembered for his outgoing personality and adventurous spirit, as well as for being a strong leader and genuine friend.

“Dylan … he had a heart of gold,” said Jared Devin, one of Engel’s former hall mates. “He cared so much about us all. There were many times where you would just talk about life. I would open up about my problems, what I was going through in life, and he helped me. He helped me become a better person; he helped me become a better Christian. He was just one of the greatest friends I have ever had.”
