Liberty among Top 5 ‘Best for Vets’ schools

Military Times has placed Liberty University in the top five online and nontraditional schools in its “Best for Vets: Colleges 2016” listing. Liberty moved up from No. 6 last year, and follows ECPI University (No. 1), Park University (No. 2), Central Texas College (No. 3), and the University of Maryland University College (No. 4) in the ranking. The featured photo on the news release included some of Liberty’s student veterans on campus.

“We consider it an honor and a privilege to serve these brave men and women who have answered the call to serve this great nation,” said Emily Foutz, director of Liberty’s Office of Military Affairs. “Every student veteran has a unique story and we appreciate the time that God allows our paths to cross to become a part of their journey.”

Military Times calls its Best for Vets listing “the most comprehensive school-by-school assessment of veteran and military students’ success rates.” The independent study evaluates many factors, including services, accommodations, and financial incentives offered to military and veteran students, as well as the veteran culture on campus. Data is pulled from the Veterans Affairs Department, Defense Department, and three Education Department databases, in addition to public data and an extensive survey.

Liberty’s military population represents all five branches of the U.S. armed forces, active duty, reserves, and National Guard. More than 31,000 current Liberty students are service members, veterans, or military spouses. Most military students are enrolled in Liberty’s online education program, where they find the flexibility they need to take classes while training, on active duty, or when starting their careers. Military Times noted that the online and nontraditional schools listing contains institutions where “most of their students don’t attend classes at a central campus.”

Liberty prides itself on providing consistent support and encouragement to military members. The Office of Military Affairs supports service members, veterans, and their spouses by offering a variety of special events and educational resources just for military students. Tuition discounts, book vouchers, and scholarships, as well as family resources and student care (including counseling) are available. It is currently Military Emphasis Week on campus. Visit Liberty’s News & Events page for coverage or go to www.Liberty.edu/MEW for more information and the event schedule.
