Liberty students, graduate featured in magazine’s ‘Best of Photography’ issue

Four Liberty University students and a recent graduate were featured as finalists in the “Best of Photography 2015” publication by “Photographer’s Forum Magazine.”

Every spring, “Photographer’s Forum Magazine” hosts a photography competition, with a selection of the best entries published in a special hardcover edition. This year’s competition received more than 20,000 international entries.

All of the Liberty finalists — Qingchuan Lu, Hannah Baker, Natalie Dallenbach, Claus Larbie, and Sarah Mitchell — majored or minored in a Department of Studio & Digital Arts (SADA) program.

“We’re starting our school year off with the momentum of last year’s strong record of student achievement,” said Todd Smith, SADA chair. “Our students have shown that they can compete not only on the national but also on the international stage. These accomplishments once again reflect the role the Studio and Digital Arts faculty play in mentoring our students, who reap the benefits of working with professors with years of ‘real world’ experience.”

Lu recently graduated with a major in graphic design and minors in both photography and studio art. He is currently working full time as a designer in Florida while photographing weddings part time. Baker is a junior criminal justice major who is also minoring in photography and German; Dallenbach is a junior double-majoring in graphic design and strategic communication; Larbie is a senior majoring in graphic design; and Mitchell is a senior majoring graphic design and studio art.

“When our student artists excel, credit is due on several levels,” said Dr. Norman Mintle, dean of Liberty’s School of Communication & Creative Arts. “First, to God for the talent He gives, then, to our faculty whose dedication to nurturing our students’ artistry is exemplary, and finally, to our students who work so hard on their craft. This level of award reflects their talent. We are duly proud of the efforts and accomplishments of our artists.”

In 2013, two SADA students were finalists in the competition.

  • The Liberty University Department of Studio & Digital Arts, under the School of Communication & Creative Arts, prepares students with a theoretical and historical understanding of studio art or graphic design. The department recently launched a Master of Fine Arts program and a Bachelor of Fine Arts program. A B.S. degree is also available with concentrations in graphic design, studio art, and teacher licensure. Minors are offered in photography, graphic design, and studio art.
