Board commends chancellor’s leadership
During last week’s biannual meeting of Liberty University’s Board of Trustees, members had a surprise recognition for Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.
Board member Neal Askew said the board made a commendation for Falwell, who he said “has continued to move LU in a direction that is complimentary of the original vision and mission of our founder Dr. Jerry Falwell.”
Askew said the March 2010 meeting celebrated Liberty’s successes.
The commendation for the chancellor was made “because of the very positive reports from each of the committees of the success of the university over the last year,” Askew said.
Successes included an increase in enrollment both in resident students and distant learning, improvements made and proposed in the academics of LU and to the campus of LU, the outstanding improvements in the financial status of LU in spite of the downturn in the economy, and “because under the leadership of the chancellor, the university is staying true to its mission, doctrine and purpose,” the board said in its commendation.
“It was an honor and privilege to commend Jerry for the outstanding leadership and direction he is providing the university,” Askew said.
Falwell said the recognition caught him by surprise.
“I greatly appreciate the board’s support and recognition and I am humbled to even play a role in the amazing miracles that God is performing every day through LU, its students, faculty and staff,” he said.
“We have a loyal and distinguished Board of Trustees that has stood beside LU through the best and worst of times.”
