Campus newspaper wins national award

Liberty University’s student-run newspaper, the Liberty Champion, was recently awarded the 2015 Campus Award of Excellence by the Evangelical Press Association (EPA).

EPA is a professional organization that recognizes outstanding Christian publications. The Champion received the award for its strong editorial content, engaging photos, and bold design.

“To receive this award for the overall quality of our paper is a testament to the hard work of each and every member of the Champion,” said Emily Brown, editor-in-chief. “I am really glad they recognized not only the quality of the writing, but also the design elements.”

Champion advisor and School of Communication & Creative Arts associate professor Deborah Huff said that this has been a year of milestones for the newspapers.

“This has been an exciting year to be the advisor at the Champion. Aside from the EPA award, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Fox News, and other media outlets have quoted the paper as a source of information about campus events,” she said. “What a great opportunity for the editors to be able to say that on their résumés.”

The Champion is a weekly publication with a circulation of more than 15,000. Its staff recently garnered three awards from the Virginia Press Association: first and second place for Informational Graphics and third place for Best Website in the VPA’s collegiate competition. In March, Brown was awarded the College Media Association Apple Award for Best Copy Editor.
