UPDATE:The throughput speed on the Internet has been increased 150 percent since Monday, March 2. IT is working to steadily increase this while implementing a long-term solution at the direction of President Jerry Falwell.
IT Department upgrades will double Internet speed on campus
Mark Norris, director of IT Operations, said students will notice an immediate difference in Internet quality following the upgrade.
“Serving student needs is a top priority. Because students live here, as well as study on campus, it requires that we provide them an environment suitable to live in,” Norris said. “This upgrade is about the student.”
Liberty is also putting infrastructure in place to maintain that quality long term. The university is acquiring hardware that will double capacity on the two systems that serve campus in the next two to three months. This upgrade will allow Liberty to accommodate for future growth without having to continuously add new hardware.
A study conducted by the department showed that Liberty’s current throughput (Internet speed) is better than most comparable institutions per user and the upgrade will place it near the top of the list in providing the highest quality of Internet service.
