Quiz Bowl Team wins eighth conference championship in 10 years
February 3, 2015
Liberty University’s Quiz Bowl Team won the Big South Conference (BSC) Championship Saturday at Longwood University, marking its eighth BSC title in the last 10 years.
Liberty beat last year’s champion, High Point University, by 215 points with a final score of 405-190. In the tournament, Liberty also defeated Gardner-Webb University, Longwood University, Coastal Carolina University, Radford University, Campbell University, and Presbyterian College, all by large point margins.
Dr. Jim Nutter, the team’s coach, said this win is significant to the university and the team.
“Every win we accomplish documents the strengths of Liberty’s academics and demonstrates that our Honors students can compete academically with anyone in the country,” Nutter said.
The varsity team includes three seniors, one junior, and a sophomore. Of those five players, four are National Merit Finalists on a full academic scholarship at Liberty.
Quiz Bowl, often called “the varsity sport of the mind,” is part of Liberty’s rigorous Honors Program and includes players from a variety of majors. Competitions resemble the game show “Jeopardy!,” with teams buzzing in to answer questions on literature, history, geography, government, the sciences, math, art, popular culture, and sports. Last spring, the Quiz Bowl Team made its first national tournament appearance.
